Best beaches
near Taormina

From the postcard-famous Isola Bella to quieter local stretches — here's where to swim near Taormina, Sicily.

Taormina's beaches at a glance

Taormina sits on a hilltop, so its beaches are actually down at sea level in Mazzarò and along the coast — reachable by the Funivia cable car in about two minutes. Don't expect fine white sand; most of the coast here is pebble and shingle, which keeps the water especially clear. Full details on all 12 beaches are in our complete beaches guide.

Isola Bella — the essential one

A small island connected to the mainland by a sandbar, sitting inside a protected marine reserve. It's Taormina's most photographed spot for good reason. See our dedicated Isola Bella guide for how to get there and what to expect.

Mazzarò — calmer and easier

Right next to Isola Bella, Mazzarò is a gentler bay with a mix of free public sections and paid lido areas. It's the easier choice for families or anyone who wants amenities close by.

Spisone — quieter, more local

A longer stretch of beach a bit further from the cable car, with a more local feel and fewer crowds than Isola Bella or Mazzarò. Good for a relaxed full day rather than a quick visit.

Beach clubs vs free beaches

Most beaches have both a free public section and paid "lido" areas with sunbeds, umbrellas, and often a bar. If you want amenities, budget €15–30/day per person for a sunbed and umbrella in high season. If you're happy bringing your own towel, the free sections work just as well.

Water shoes help. Several beaches have pebbly or rocky entry points — worth packing a pair, especially for kids.

Best time to go

May, June and September offer warm water with noticeably smaller crowds than peak summer. July and August are beautiful but busy — arrive early to get a good spot on free sections.
