Best time to visit Taormina's attractions
Visit the Greek Theatre early morning (9am) or late afternoon (after 4pm) — the light is better and the crowds are smaller. The gardens are best at golden hour. The Corso Umberto is magical in the evening when shop lights come on. Avoid midday in July–August — Taormina at 35°C is genuinely brutal for sightseeing. Carry water. Most monuments close on Mondays.

Via del Teatro Greco 40, Taormina
🕘 9am – 4:45pm daily
🎟️ €14 adult · €7 (EU 18–25) · Under 18 free

The most important ancient monument in Sicily and one of the greatest theatres of the ancient world. Built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, expanded by the Romans — 10,000 seats, 209 metres in circumference. The view from inside is the best in Taormina: Mount Etna perfectly framed behind the stage, the Ionian Sea glittering below, and the town perched on the cliffs above. No photograph prepares you for how good this actually looks. In summer the theatre hosts concerts, opera and Taormina Arte performances — check the events calendar if you want to experience a show here.
Insider: Go at 9am sharp when it opens — you'll have the theatre nearly to yourself for 45 minutes before the tour groups arrive. The last entry is at 3:30pm. First Sunday of the month: completely free. Book online to skip the queue.

🏛️ Island museum 9am–7:45pm (summer)
TT recommends
Taormina's most iconic image — a tiny island connected to the shore by a sandy spit that appears and disappears with the tides. A UNESCO-recognised nature reserve with twin crescents of pebble beach and water so clear you can see the seabed 6 metres down. The island itself holds a historic villa-museum (€6). Walk across the spit at low tide — it's one of those genuinely unforgettable moments that makes you understand why people call Sicily magical.
Insider: The sandy spit to the island disappears at high tide — check tide times and go in the morning. Arrive before 9am in July–August to find a good spot on the free beach. The view back up to Taormina from the island is even better than the view down.

Piazza IX Aprile
Taormina's great terrace · best sunset view
Corso Umberto I, Taormina
🕰️ Always open
🌅 Best at 6:30–7:30pm

Not a museum, not a monument — just a public square. But possibly the finest viewpoint in all of Sicily. The piazza faces west across the Ionian coast with an unobstructed view of the coastline, the sea, and Mount Etna. The clock tower of the Church of San Giuseppe rises above you. At sunset the light turns the limestone façades gold and Etna glows on the horizon. This is the centre of Taormina's social life — the passeggiata happens here every evening. Just stand here. That's enough.
Insider: Come twice — once during the day for the view, once at 7pm to watch the sun go down. The bars around the square (Wunderbar, Mocambo) are expensive — sit at one anyway. The view is part of what you're paying for.

From Porta Catania to Porta Messina, Taormina
🚶 15–30 min end to end

The pedestrian backbone of Taormina — 800 metres of elegance from one medieval gate to the other. Every major sight, church, café, viewpoint and boutique in Taormina is either on this street or within a minute of it. Walk the full length at least once. The evening passeggiata (6pm–9pm) is a Sicilian institution — locals and visitors alike strolling, stopping at bars, watching the world go by. The lit façades at night are extraordinary.
Insider: Walk from Porta Messina (north) to Porta Catania (south) in the morning for the best light and fewest people. Reverse direction in the evening. The side streets and stairways off the Corso hide the best discoveries.

Odeon — Small Roman Theatre
Odeon Romano
Largo Timoleone, off Corso Umberto, Taormina
🕘 Usually open during daylight hours
🎟️ Free to view from street
TT recommends
A complete small Roman theatre hidden just off the main Corso — most visitors walk straight past it. Built in the 1st century AD for small performances and recitals. Partially excavated, partially covered by a church built on top of it. The Timoleone Café (see Nightlife) sits right beside it — have a drink next to a 2,000-year-old Roman theatre. One of the great free sights in Taormina.
Insider: Walk down the Timoleone stairway from Corso Umberto. The Odeon is visible from street level and usually accessible to view close-up. Far fewer visitors than the main theatre — a quieter, more intimate ruin.

One of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Sicily — a Gothic-Arab-Norman palazzo with a striking crenellated tower and ornate windows. Built in the 15th century and now home to the tourist information office. The courtyard inside is free to enter — look for the carved reliefs on the staircase depicting the story of Adam and Eve. Stop here first when you arrive in Taormina.

TT recommends
A 122-metre long Roman brick wall lining Via Naumachia — one of the longest ancient Roman structures in Sicily and astonishingly well preserved. Believed to be part of a cistern or gymnasium complex from the 2nd century AD. Most people walk past without noticing it — it just looks like the wall of a street. Stop and look at the brickwork closely. Two thousand year old Roman construction holding up the street above.
Insider: Via Naumachia is also one of the best-looking streets in Taormina for photography — the Roman wall, bougainvillea, and wisteria draped over it in spring and summer. Arco Rosso wine bar (see Nightlife) is on this street.

Palazzo Duca di Santo Stefano
14th century · Gothic-Arab-Norman style
Via De Spuches, Taormina
🕰️ Exterior always visible
TT recommends
One of the finest examples of Gothic-Arab architecture in Sicily — a 14th-century palazzo with beautifully carved black lava stone windows and interlaced arches. The facade is extraordinary: Norman, Arab and Gothic elements woven together in a way that could only have happened in Norman Sicily. Look for the three-light window on the upper floor — it's one of the most photographed architectural details in Taormina.

TT recommends
The two medieval gates that mark the beginning and end of Corso Umberto I. Porta Catania (southern gate, 15th century) has a distinctive clock tower with a Sicilian coat of arms. Porta Messina (northern gate) is the older and more imposing of the two, set in a wider square with views down to the coast. Walking from gate to gate is the classic way to experience the full length of Taormina.

A striking 14th-century Gothic tower with the same black lava stone and interlaced arch decoration as Palazzo Santo Stefano — both products of the same extraordinary Norman-Arab architectural tradition. The tower rises elegantly above the surrounding buildings. The view of Badia Vecchia from Via Circonvallazione with the sea behind it is one of the best photographs in Taormina.

Created in the 1800s by Florence Trevelyan, a Scottish noblewoman who was exiled from the English court (the rumour was an affair with the Prince of Wales). She built the most extraordinary garden in Sicily — exotic plants from around the world, Victorian follies designed as elaborate birdhouses, and views over the Ionian coast. The follies alone are worth the visit — ornate brick towers that look like something from a fairytale. Come in the morning when the light is soft and the garden is quiet.
Insider: The belvedere terrace at the far end of the garden has the best unobstructed view of Isola Bella from above. Free summer evening concerts (Un Palco per Tutti) are held here — check the Taormina events calendar.

A public terrace on the southern perimeter of Taormina with sweeping views down to Giardini Naxos bay, the coastline and, on clear days, all the way to the slopes of Etna. Different perspective from Piazza IX Aprile — this looks south rather than west. Less crowded, more locals, no bar obliging you to buy a €8 Spritz to sit. A proper belvedere to breathe in and watch the light change.

A natural park carved by the Alcantara river below Taormina — dramatic ravines, waterfalls, subtropical vegetation, and views back up to the clifftop town. Managed by FAI (the Italian equivalent of the National Trust). A steep path descends to the waterfall — wear good shoes, not sandals. Less visited than the main Taormina sights but genuinely beautiful, especially in spring when the vegetation is lush.

A 13th-century fortress-church that looks more like a castle than a place of worship — the thick crenellated walls were designed for defence as much as prayer. Inside: pink marble columns, a beautiful gilded altarpiece and the feeling of stepping 800 years back. The Baroque fountain outside — with its half-woman, half-horse centaur (the symbol of Taormina) — is the most photographed monument on the Corso. The square is the true heart of Taormina.
Insider: The centaur fountain in Piazza del Duomo is Taormina's emblem — she holds an orb and a flower and looks completely unbothered by 800 years of tourism. The best photo of her has Etna in the background on a clear morning.

The beautiful Baroque church that frames Piazza IX Aprile's famous view. The white façade rises above the piazza with elegant simplicity. The older of the two churches on Piazza IX Aprile — a 15th-century Augustinian church now converted into the town's public library. The Gothic portal is exceptionally beautiful — carved stone with an elegance rare for its period. The interior, when open, has barrel-vaulted ceilings and the hushed atmosphere of a converted sacred space. A unique building that bookends the piazza on the opposite side from San Giuseppe.

🥾 30–40 min hike up from Taormina

The castle ruins on the rocky crag directly above Taormina — built by the Romans, rebuilt by the Arabs, modified by the Normans. The view from the top is higher and more dramatic than anything in Taormina itself: the whole town below, Etna to the north, the coastline sweeping south to Giardini Naxos. A steep but rewarding 30-minute hike up. Take the path from Via Circonvallazione in the early morning before the heat builds.
Insider: Go very early morning (7–9am) or late afternoon. Midday heat makes the climb genuinely unpleasant in summer. Wear proper shoes — the path is rocky. Bring water. The ruins themselves are atmospheric even without a guide.

The best Taormina isn't on Corso Umberto — it's on the tiny perpendicular streets and stairways that run off it. Vicolo Stretto (the narrowest alley) barely fits one person. The Salita steps are lined with ceramics and bougainvillea. Via Naumachia hides a 2,000-year-old Roman wall. Via Calapitrulli has the best boutiques. No map needed — just turn down anything that isn't the main street. Getting slightly lost in Taormina is the best way to experience it.

The road that runs around the perimeter of Taormina's ridge — on one side the town's historic buildings, on the other a sheer drop with unobstructed views of the Ionian Sea and the coastline. Hidden around the headland from Isola Bella — the Blue Grotto and Mermaid Bay are only accessible by water. The Grotta Azzurra has an enchanting blue glow from sunlight refracting through the water. Mermaid Bay is a tiny sheltered cove with crystal water in colours that look digitally enhanced. 🎟️ ~€25–35 per person

The best way to see the Taormina coastline — from sea level you get a completely different perspective of the cliffs, grottoes and coves that are invisible from above. Standard 2-hour routes cover Mermaid Bay, Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), Capo Taormina and often Baia di Spisone. Most boats include a swimming stop in a sheltered cove, Prosecco and fresh fruit. Departs from the Isola Bella pier throughout the day.
Insider: Morning departures (9–10am) have calmer water and better light for the grottos. The early boat is less crowded. Sunset departures are romantic but the grottos lose their blue glow in late afternoon light.

The Sicilian passeggiata — the evening stroll — is one of the most genuinely pleasurable things you can do in any Italian town, and Taormina does it beautifully. Every evening from about 6pm, the Corso Umberto fills with locals and visitors simply walking, looking, stopping for gelato, sitting at café terraces. Street musicians play in the piazze. The lit facades glow. The air cools. There's nothing to book, nothing to pay for — just join it. It's how Sicily lives.
