How to eat like a local in Taormina
The best food isn't on Corso Umberto — it's down the side streets like Via Calapitrone and Via Naumachia. Skip the pre-filled cannoli glistening in windows (soggy) and the arancini sweating under heat lamps. Real cannoli are filled to order with grainy sheep's-milk ricotta. Sicilians eat dinner late — kitchens hit their stride after 8:30pm. Book ahead for the popular trattorie in season. And always start the day with granita and brioche — it's breakfast, Sicilian style.

The most famous granita in Taormina — and deservedly so. Almond, pistachio, coffee, wild strawberry and lemon granita served with a warm brioche col tuppo. The queue out the door is worth it. Tear off pieces of the brioche and dip them into the icy granita — the warm-cold contrast is the whole experience.

Restaurant FAQs

Where should I eat in Taormina?
It depends what you want. For a classic sit-down dinner, the trattorie around Via Calapitrone and Piazza San Domenico are excellent. For a quick, affordable bite, head to a pizzeria on Corso Umberto or a street-food kiosk near Porta Messina. Every listing on this page is marked with a category and price so you can filter by what you're after.
Are restaurants in Taormina expensive?
Taormina has a wide range. Sea-view terrace restaurants and Michelin-recognised spots run €€€, but plenty of authentic trattorie and pizzerias are €–€€. We tag every place with a price band so you can filter by budget.
What are the best cheap restaurants in Taormina?
Pizza by the slice (like Pizza Mania), rosticcerie, and family-run trattorie just off Corso Umberto tend to be the best value. Filter this page by "€" to see the full budget-friendly list.
Where can I find Sicilian street food in Taormina?
Look for arancini, sfincione and pidone at the small kiosks around the old town and near Porta Messina. Our Street Food category on this page lists the ones worth seeking out.
Do I need a reservation?
For dinner in high season (June–September), yes — especially at popular or sea-view restaurants. Lunch and off-season dining are usually more relaxed about walk-ins.
What is Taormina's most famous dish?
Granita with brioche is the essential Taormina breakfast — almond and coffee flavours are the local favourites. For a full meal, look for swordfish involtini and fresh pasta with Sicilian pesto (pesto alla trapanese).
Is tap water free at restaurants in Sicily?
No — like most of Italy, restaurants in Taormina typically serve and charge for bottled water, and most also add a small "coperto" (cover charge) per person. Both are normal practice, not a scam.
