The TT buying guide — what's actually worth your money
Taormina's main shopping street (Corso Umberto) is a mix of genuine local treasure and mass-produced tourist junk. The trick is knowing the difference. Ceramics — look for signed pieces made in Caltagirone or Santo Stefano; avoid anything that looks factory-stamped. Pistachios from Bronte — Sicily's greatest product, buy vacuum-sealed bags. Modica chocolate — ancient Aztec recipe, grainy texture, no added fat; genuine Modica is never smooth. Etna wines — DOC certified, from small family producers. Olive oil — DOP Sicilian label, glass bottle. Tax-free shopping for non-EU visitors. Most shops ship internationally.

⚠️
What to avoid on Corso Umberto
Mass-produced ceramics — if it has no signature or "Made in China" sticker, skip it. Pre-packaged "Sicilian" products with no producer name or address. Limoncello in souvenir bottles — usually industrial. Ceramics stalls that look identical to 10 others on the same street — the real artisan shops are slightly off the main drag. When in doubt, ask where the item was made and by whom. Any good shop will tell you immediately.

TT recommends
Owned by two sisters who create everything themselves. Whimsical, original designs completely different from the 90% of gaudy ceramics everywhere else in town. The pieces are colourful yet modern — something you'd actually want in your home. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. The sisters took time to speak with customers about their craft. Visitors came back a second time just to see them. The best ceramics shop in Taormina, without question.

Insider: Ask the sisters about their inspiration for each piece — every item has a story. They can ship internationally with careful packing. Buy early in your trip so you can enjoy meeting them before you leave.

Le Maioliche di Sebastiano Caristia
Salita Francesco De Luna 4, Taormina
TT recommends
Off the main tourist strip on the Salita steps — real Caltagirone pottery signed by the artist. "Got a piece I hadn't seen anywhere else in Sicily" — that's the standard here. The clerk speaks perfect English, doesn't upsell, and double-checks shipping addresses. Pieces are packed flawlessly — no breakage reported. A proper ceramics shop where the art comes first.

Insider: Go to the Salita steps off Corso Umberto — the artisan shops here are better quality and cheaper than the main drag. Sebastiano loves explaining his work if you speak a little Italian.

A historic novelty and gift shop since 1885 — one of the oldest shops in Taormina. Local crafts, ceramics, Sicilian puppets and memorable souvenirs that capture the essence of Sicily. The kind of shop that has stayed relevant for 140 years because the quality never dropped. Great for finding something genuinely unique and historically grounded.

One of the most photogenic alleyways in Taormina — an uphill stone stairway with vibrant ceramics and artisan crafts lining every step. A mix of quality levels, but browsing is half the fun. Good for discovering unexpected finds, comparing prices, and photographing. The colourful displays against the stone steps are iconic Taormina.

Insider: Browse the whole stairway before buying anything — quality and prices vary widely between stalls. The stalls furthest from Corso Umberto tend to have better quality and more willing to negotiate.

A few hundred metres from the main tourist track — and the difference is immediately apparent. Honey, jams, pastas, pestos, wines, Sicilian spirits — everything is curated and genuine, no tourist-grade products. Enrico makes magnificent sandwiches to order (prosciutto + mozzarella + tomatoes; tuna + olives + ricotta). Employees from cafes and bars go here on their breaks to pick up paninis — the highest local endorsement possible.

Pistachios from Bronte (the town on Etna's slopes) are the finest in the world — DOP certified, intensely green, rich flavour unlike anything you've tasted from a supermarket. Buy vacuum-sealed bags for travel — they keep for months. Also buy pistachio cream (like Nutella but from actual pistachios), pistachio pesto, and pistachio torrone (nougat). The best souvenirs you can bring home from Sicily.

Insider: Look for the DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) seal — it guarantees genuine Bronte origin. Green means fresh — if they look grey or dull, don't buy. The pistachio cream in a dark glass jar is the best format for travel.

Modica chocolateAncient recipe
Modica Chocolate Shops
Specialty shops, Corso Umberto I
TT recommends
Modica chocolate is a UNESCO-recognised Sicilian food heritage — an ancient Aztec recipe where cacao is cold-worked with raw sugar only, producing a grainy, intensely flavoured bar with no added fats or milk. Flavours: cinnamon, chilli, vanilla, citrus, carob, pistachio, sea salt. If it's smooth, it's not genuine Modica. Buy IGP-certified bars. A revelation for anyone who thinks they know chocolate.
CinnamonChilliPistachioSea saltCitrus
Insider: Look for the IGP (Indicazione Geografica Protetta) Cioccolato di Modica seal. The texture should be grainy, never smooth. Cold-worked means no tempering — it crumbles when you bite it. That's correct. Buy 3–4 different flavours to compare.

Local Enoteca — Etna DOC Wines
Taormina centro — ask TT or your hotel
TT recommends
Etna wines are having a global moment — sommeliers worldwide are calling them some of the best expressions of terroir in Italy. Nerello Mascalese (the red grape) produces wines often compared to fine Burgundy. Family-run wine shops in Taormina let you taste before buying, which is rare and worth seeking out. Ask for wines from specific contrade (small volcanic plots) — each tastes different.
Etna Rosso DOCNerello MascaleseNero d'AvolaTaste first
Insider: Fabrizio at one of the local wine shops is particularly knowledgeable — if you speak a little Italian, he'll talk for hours about Etna's volcanic soil and how it affects the wine. His small-producer selection is exceptional. The wines are heavy but most shops offer international shipping.

Volcanic lava rock from Etna, often set in silver or gold, sometimes combined with red coral or precious stones. The dark matte black of lava against gold or silver is strikingly beautiful — and the material itself is unique: you cannot buy Etna lava jewellery outside Sicily. Rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings. Some pieces are also set with sulphur crystals from inside the volcano.

Insider: Look for hallmarked silver settings (925 stamp) — this guarantees the metal quality. The lava stone itself cannot be faked. Ask to see pieces in daylight — lava has a subtle texture that's hard to appreciate under shop lighting.
