Why Taormina's sunsets are different
Taormina sits on the east coast of Sicily, which means the sun sets over the hills and mountains behind town rather than into the sea — but that makes for some genuinely dramatic viewpoints, especially with Mount Etna often visible in the distance catching the last light. Here are the best spots to catch it.
Piazza IX Aprile
The most accessible option, right on Corso Umberto. The piazza's terrace looks out over the coastline, and it's a natural stop as you're already walking the main street. Arrive a little before sunset to get a good spot at the railing.
The Ancient Theatre area
If the theatre is open in the evening (it hosts events with extended hours in summer), the view from up there over the sea and toward Etna is one of the best in town. Even from just outside, the surrounding viewpoint area delivers a similar effect.
Castelmola
For a more dramatic, elevated sunset, head up to Castelmola. The hilltop village looks down over Taormina and the whole coastline, and pairs perfectly with a glass of almond wine at Bar Turrisi while you watch the light change.
Isola Bella beach
A completely different angle — watching the light shift over the water from beach level, looking back up at Taormina perched on the hillside. Less dramatic than the hilltop options, but a lovely, quieter way to end a beach day.
