Choosing where to stay
Taormina's compact size means location matters less than it might elsewhere, but there are still meaningful differences between staying in the historic centre, down by the coast, or in a nearby village. Here's how to decide.
Historic centre (near Corso Umberto)
The most convenient base for most visitors — everything is walkable, including the Ancient Theatre, restaurants, and shopping. Expect higher prices and, in peak season, more noise from the busy pedestrian streets. Best for first-time visitors who want everything within easy reach.
Mazzarò / the coast
Staying near the beach means direct access to Isola Bella and Mazzarò without relying on the Funivia's operating hours. It's a good option if the beach is your priority, though you'll rely on the cable car or a short taxi ride to reach the town centre.
Castelmola
For a quieter, more local base with dramatic hilltop views, Castelmola is a genuine alternative — though you'll need transport (Interbus, taxi, or a fairly strenuous walk) to reach Taormina's centre and coast.
Giardini Naxos
A short distance down the coast, Giardini Naxos tends to be more affordable than Taormina itself, with its own sandy beaches and a more relaxed, less touristy atmosphere — a reasonable base if budget matters and you don't mind a short commute into Taormina.
