TT GuideWhere to Stay

Where to stay
in Taormina

Historic centre, coastal Mazzarò, or a quieter hilltop base — here's how to choose the right area for your trip.

Choosing where to stay

Taormina's compact size means location matters less than it might elsewhere, but there are still meaningful differences between staying in the historic centre, down by the coast, or in a nearby village. Here's how to decide.

Historic centre (near Corso Umberto)

The most convenient base for most visitors — everything is walkable, including the Ancient Theatre, restaurants, and shopping. Expect higher prices and, in peak season, more noise from the busy pedestrian streets. Best for first-time visitors who want everything within easy reach.

Mazzarò / the coast

Staying near the beach means direct access to Isola Bella and Mazzarò without relying on the Funivia's operating hours. It's a good option if the beach is your priority, though you'll rely on the cable car or a short taxi ride to reach the town centre.

Castelmola

For a quieter, more local base with dramatic hilltop views, Castelmola is a genuine alternative — though you'll need transport (Interbus, taxi, or a fairly strenuous walk) to reach Taormina's centre and coast.

Giardini Naxos

A short distance down the coast, Giardini Naxos tends to be more affordable than Taormina itself, with its own sandy beaches and a more relaxed, less touristy atmosphere — a reasonable base if budget matters and you don't mind a short commute into Taormina. See our Taormina vs Giardini Naxos comparison for more detail.

A practical tip

Book early for high season. June through September, the best-located accommodation fills up months in advance. If you're flexible on dates, shoulder season (May, June, September) offers better availability and lower prices.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to stay in Taormina?
The historic centre near Corso Umberto is the most convenient for first-time visitors, with everything walkable. For beach access, consider Mazzarò; for a quieter, local feel, Castelmola is a genuine alternative.
Is it better to stay in Taormina or Giardini Naxos?
Taormina offers more atmosphere and walkability to major sights; Giardini Naxos tends to be more affordable with its own beaches, at the cost of a short commute into Taormina itself.
How far in advance should I book accommodation in Taormina?
For June through September, book several months ahead if possible — the best-located places fill up early. Shoulder season (May, June, September) has more flexibility.
Is Castelmola a good base for visiting Taormina?
It's quieter and offers dramatic views, but requires transport (Interbus, taxi, or a strenuous walk) to reach Taormina's centre and beaches, so it suits travellers prioritising a peaceful base over convenience.
